Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
UMass Lowell baseball hit the 30-win plateau as it swept Pace University during Friday afternoon's double-header, 5-4 and 3-0. Rookie Dylan Flynn (Upton, Mass.) knocked in a career-high four RBI in game one.
The River Hawks, riding an eight-game winning streak, boost their overall record to 30-6 with the sweep and stand at 14-4 in Northeast-10 play. Head coach Ken Harring now has three 30-win seasons since he took over in 2005. With the losses, Pace stumbles to 13-22-1 on the campaign and 5-13 in conference play.
In the day's first contest, the Setters put three runs on the board in the second inning to take the afternoon's first lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single to right field off the bat of Steve Sterfacci (Bohemia, N.Y.).
The River Hawks slashed the deficit in the fourth with a two RBI double from Flynn, but Pace scored another run in the bottom half to etch the score at 4-2.
UMass Lowell appeared to run out of time headed into the top of the ninth inning, but the offense came alive again with another two-run double by Flynn to tie the game. A few batters later, Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) ripped a two-out game-winning double to center field to plate Flynn.
On the mound, Garrett Cole (Manchester, N.H.) survived some early adventures to earn a no-decision. Cole pitched seven innings, allowed four runs--one earned--and walked four batters. The sophomore also struck out three. The reigning National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association East Region and National Pitcher of the Week, Vinny DePierro (Tewksbury, Mass.), tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his third win of the season.
In the late game, the clubs spun their wheels through the first five innings as both pitchers kept the scoreboard clean.
Pace blinked first as UMass Lowell was able to push a run across in the sixth. With Connor Burnham (Harwich, Mass.) on second, Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) singled into center and was caught in a pickle as he tried to advance to second. Despite tagging out Jacobs, Burnham snuck home to take a 1-0 lead.
The River Hawks padded the lead in the final two innings as Jacobs scored on an error in the eighth and Burnham hit an RBI double in the ninth.
Starter Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) was electric as he threw his first complete game shutout to improve to 6-1 on the season. Robinson allowed six hits, but didn't surrender a walk and struck out a career-high 10 batters.
The River Hawks will take the rest of the weekend off, resuming action on Tuesday with a clash against NE-10 leader Franklin Pierce at 7 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
