UMass Lowell baseball storms LeLacheur Park for a double-header on Tuesday against Saint Michael's at 3:30 p.m. The River Hawks (22-6, 9-4 Northeast-10) look to halt their three-game losing skid.
Entering Tuesday, UMass Lowell stands tied for fourth in the NE-10 and ranks fifth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll. The Purple Knights own a 4-11 record and have lost six consecutive games.
To get back on track the River Hawk offense will need Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) to continue his outstanding play at the plate. The junior is hitting a team-best .368 with three home runs and 35 RBI. Kneeland also has smacked 11 doubles and scored 27 runs.
Often on base in front of Kneeland, lead off batter Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) is enjoying a stellar campaign as well. Jacobs is hitting .327 with a team-high 33 runs scored and 22 RBI. The speedster has drawn 15 walks and stole 11 bases, pestering pitchers throughout the season.
A pitcher who figures to factor into today's contests is junior Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, Mass.). The southpaw has appeared in nine games, starting once, and logged over 25 innings with a 2.84 ERA. Guilmette ranks third on the team with 29 strikeouts and carries an impressive 3-0 while also recording a save.
Saint Michael's key threat is second baseman Pete Estes (Bennington, Vt.). Estes is hitting a club-best .286 with five RBI and eight runs scored. A threat on the base paths as well, he is a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts.
