The University of Massachusetts Lowell has determined that it will not renew the contract for head women’s basketball coach, Kathy O’Neil, Director of Athletics Dana Skinner announced today.
O’Neil has been serving as head coach since 1986. She recently completed the 2010-11 season with a 9-18 record, which included an 8-14 showing in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The River Hawks secured the No. 10 seed for the NE-10 Tournament but fell, 74-59, Sunday at No. 7 Saint Michael’s in the first round.
“We are thankful to Kathy O’Neil for her 26 years of service to UMass Lowell and we wish her the best," Skinner said.
A search for a head coach will begin immediately.
In 26 seasons, O’Neil compiled a record of 411-329 which included eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
O’Neil is a native of Laconia, N.H.
