The River Hawk softball team outscored Felician 21-3 in a two-game sweep on Sunday afternoon. UMass Lowell won game one 9-0, then downed the Golden Falcons 12-3 in the late contest.
UMass Lowell improves to 14-8 overall with the pair of victories and Felician drops to 4-12.
Three different River Hawks combined for a program record five home runs in the 9-0 win over Felician in game one.
Standout pitcher Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) spun a gem on the mound, carrying a perfect game through the first four innings. She finished with a complete game two-hit victory, improving to 10-5 overall.
The River Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings. In the first, Katie Mazure (Burlington, Mass.) hit an RBI single through the left side to score Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass.). Then, in the second inning, Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) connected on a solo home run to left field, her first of the season.
Mazure extended the lead to 3-0 in the third as she hit her first deep ball of the year, a solo shot to center field.
The Golden Falcons broke up Boris' bid for perfection in the fifth after a hit-by-pitch, error and single loaded the bases, but the veteran hurler got out of the jam unscathed.
In the fifth, Boris helped her own cause with a two-run homer to right-center field, pushing the score to 5-0.
UMass Lowell put the icing on the cake in the seventh, scoring four more runs to put the game out of reach. Boris slugged a three-run blast, followed by a solo home run from Mazure, the second of the game for each batter.
In the second game, the offense kept its rhythm with an RBI double to left-center field by Mazure in the first inning. The River Hawks kept up the pressure in the second as Daniels stole home with the bases loaded to extend the score to 2-0.
The River Hawks exploded for ten runs in the middle innings, highlighted by a two-run homer by Mazure and a two RBI double by Ross. Mazure finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBI.
The Golden Falcons got three runs back in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to avoid the mercy rule.
Boris started on the mound, but handed the ball to Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) in the third inning as she picked up her fourth victory of the season. Boris surrendered just one hit, two walks and struck out one. Schafler allowed seven hits, two earned runs and fanned one batter.
With Sunday's double-header in the books, UMass Lowell gears up for its home opener on Tuesday. Stonehill visits River View Field to open Northeast-10 play with a double-header scheduled for 3 p.m.
