Softball Splits Doubleheader with Post

March 22, 2011

Box Score

With a split against the Post University Eagles this afternoon, the UMass Lowell softball team has successfully won five of its last six and looks to continue rolling with strong and consistent play. The squad dropped the first game of the day 3-1 before bouncing back with a 4-2 win at Lamoy Field in Waterbury, Conn.

With the split, UMass Lowell stands at 12-8 on the year, while Post falls to 6-11 overall. The River Hawks have a doubleheader on Sunday at Felician before opening their Northeast-10 Conference schedule by hosting Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on River View Field.

In the first clash of the day, Post began with a steady flow of one-run innings through the first three. UMass Lowell was only able to cross the plate once, in the second, before shutting the Eagles down the rest of the way. UMass Lowell's lone run of the game was scored by sophomore Katie Mazure (Burlington, Mass.).

Junior Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) earned the loss, falling to 9-5 on the year. She allowed eight hits and three runs through the complete six innings of work.

Despite falling down 2-1 through the first inning of the second game, UMass Lowell held the Eagles without a run for the rest of the late game and proceeded to tie the game in the third and go-ahead with a two-run fourth inning. They collected seven hits compared to just five by Post.

Sophomore classmates Mazure and Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) each notched a pair of hits in the game to lead the River Hawks, while Mazure also tallied an RBI.

The definitive two-run fourth inning began with a double from sophomore Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, Mass.). The hit was followed by a walk by Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.). Both runners were advanced by Hilary Hopkins (San Diego, Calif.) and again by Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) They scored on an error before the inning closed out. The two runs were enough insurance to secure the win.

Boris and Schafler split the pitching duties in the second contest, while Schafler picked up the win, her third of the year. Schafler allowed three hits and two runs in three innings of work, striking out a pair. Boris relieved her, throwing four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.
