March 14, 2011

Box Score

Day three of the Palm Beach Challenge showcased the River Hawk baseball team's arms and bats, topping Nyack and Caldwell by a combined score of 26-4. Junior Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) collected five hits and seven RBI in the pair of wins.

The sweep pushes the River Hawks' streak to nine games, their most since winning 11 consecutive in 2006. Over that span they have outscored opponents 61-10. UMass Lowell improves to 9-1 overall and 5-0 on its annual Florida swing. The Warriors fall to 0-9 on the season while the Cougars drop to 3-6.

"I said yesterday that the last inning against Philadelphia would spur us on offensively and I think it did," said head coach Ken Harring. "We came out with 32 hits today and since we've moved James Katsiroubas to the four-hole he's been on fire. We're getting healthy and we're just going to continue to get better."

Several River Hawks shined at the plate, including Jacobs who went 3-for-6 with four RBI. Freshman Dylan Flynn (Upton, Mass.) collected three hits, including a triple, and three RBI while sophomore James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

In the 10-2 win over Caldwell, Garrett Cole (Manchester, N.H.) led the charge for his first victory of the season. The righty limited the Cougars to one earned run over eight innings, while fanning nine batters.

With the game knotted at 1-1 after the first, UMass Lowell kicked the offense into gear in the second as Flynn led off with a double. Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass.) and T.J. Larivee (Salem, Mass.) followed with back-to-back singles to take the lead. With two ducks on the pond, Jacobs smacked a triple to push the score to 4-1 as the River Hawks never looked back.

UMass Lowell aims to stay hot as it takes on Mercy and Philadelphia tomorrow in another split double-header starting at 10 a.m.
