Sophomore Evan White (Tewksbury, Mass.) won the 400 meter dash to lead the UMass Lowell men’s track and field team at the Yale University Giegengack Invitational Friday and Saturday at Coxe Cage.
The non-scoring invitational drew primarily Division I colleges from the Northeast as well as a handful of Division II teams such as UMass Lowell, New Haven and Southern Connecticut.
White captured the 400 meters in 48.96 seconds as UMass Lowell occupied the top three places. Junior Jeff Wundt (Southwick, Mass.) placed second in 49.33 seconds and senior Donte Brown (Raynham, Mass.) was right behind in 49.39 seconds.
Senior Cory Murray (Methuen, Mass.) placed fifth overall and tops among Division II-III throwers in the shot put with a throw of 51’ 0.25’’. Senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, Mass.) also emerged in the Division II-III field, placing fifth (first) in the triple jump with a distance of 44’ 8.75’’.
Cameron Mitchell (Wakefield, Mass.) was among four freshmen who turned in solid results on the weekend. Mitchell placed eighth overall (first among D-II, III entries) in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.56 seconds.
Freshman Jamal Abu-Hijleh (Peabody, Mass.) placed 11th (first) in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet even while freshman David Brown (Chelmsford, Mass) took 11th (first) in the 1,000 meters in 2:30.37.
Also impressing was freshman Casey O’Brien (Seekonk, Mass.), who placed 11th (third) in the 200 meter dash in 22.78 seconds.
UMass Lowell enters the Boston University St. Valentine’s Day Invitational Friday and Saturday at the BU Track and Tennis Center.
