Sophomore Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro, Mass.) won the 400 meter dash to lead the UMass Lowell women’s track and field team at the Yale University Giegengack Invitational Friday and Saturday at Coxe Cage.

The non-scoring invitational drew primarily Division I colleges from the Northeast as well as a handful of Division II teams such as UMass Lowell, New Haven and Southern Connecticut.

Cunningham, who ranks 15th in the country in the 400 (57.05, at the Harvard Open Dec. 11), won Saturday’s event in 57.58 seconds and led a host of stellar efforts on the weekend.

Junior Ashley Zielinski (Manchester, N.H.) placed fourth overall and tops among Division II and III athletes in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.02 seconds. She also placed 12th overall (second among D-II, III runners behind Cunningham) in the 400 meters in 59.77 seconds.

Senior Lauren Raimondi (East Longmeadow, Mass.) also did well in two events, placing in a tie for second overall (first among II-III athletes) in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 3.0 inches. Raimondi also took seventh overall and second behind Zielinski in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.25 seconds.

Freshman Marissa Avery (Colrain, Mass.) placed tied for seventh in the high jump, clearing 5’ 1.0’’.

Freshman Candace Greene (Annapolis, Md.), who threw a personal-best 43’ 8.0’’ last week at the Boston University Terrier Invitational, eclipsed that mark Saturday with a toss of 43’ 9.75’’ to place second overall and tops among the D-II, III field.

Greene’s result leaves her just 1.50’’ short of meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Freshman Diamond Jones (Lowell, Mass.) also impressed, winning the D-II, III field in the triple jump and placing seventh overall with a distance of 35’ 6.5’’.

Other stellar results included that of junior Amy Delgado (Bridgewater, Mass.), who placed ninth (second) in the 500 meters in 1:18.52; and freshman Elisabeth Monty (Charlton, Mass.), who took 12th (second) in the 200 meter dash in 26.51 seconds.

UMass Lowell enters the Boston University St. Valentine’s Day Invitational Friday and Saturday at the BU Track and Tennis Center.
