Sophomore Evan White (Tewksbury, Mass.) won the 200 meter preliminary and broke his own school record for the third time this season to lead the UMass Lowell men's track and field team at the New England Championship Friday at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.
The renowned meet draws New England colleges and universities from all three divisions as the top eight athletes in each event earn All-New England status.
White was among seven UMass Lowell athletes, including five sprinters, to qualify for Saturday's finals as he ran the 200 meters in 21.09 seconds, smashing his previous milestone of 21.30 set last week at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.
With the result, White moves back on top of the NCAA Division II list, leapfrogging senior Desmond Jackson of Abilene Christian who ranks second with a time of 21.26 seconds.
Junior Jeff Wundt (Southwick, Mass.) captured the 400 meter dash preliminary in 48.19 seconds and led three UMass Lowell sprinters among the top 11 places, each moving on to Saturday's final. Senior Donte Brown (Raynham, Mass.) placed fifth in 49.03 seconds while sophomore Craig Bennett (Milton, Mass.) took 11th in 49.44.
Also enjoying a magnificent showing thus far was freshman Keith Lewis (Nashua, N.H.), who currently sits in second place (among 12 entries) in the heptathlon with 2,662 points after four events.
Lewis highlighted by winning the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 6.25 inches; and placing second in the 60 meter dash in 7.33 seconds. He also placed seventh in both the long jump (19' 10.25'') and the shot put (33' 8.75).
Lewis trails only Aaron King of the University of Connecticut, who leads with 2,968 points.
Senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, Mass.) was the first to earn All-New England honors as he placed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 22' 0.25''.
Also impressing in the sprints was freshman Chris Perkins (Boston, Mass.), who placed 16th overall (fifth among Division II-III athletes) in 7.20 seconds and moves on to the final.
Freshman Cameron Mitchell (Wakefield, Mass.) booked his place in the 60 meter hurdles final as he placed 12th (5th) in the preliminary in 8.49 seconds.
In the 800 meters, freshman David Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) fell one place short of the final as he placed 11th in 1:52.57. He did however, improve from 14th on the Division II list to eighth, virtually solidifying his place in the NCAA Championship.
The meet begins Saturday with the continuation of the heptathlon at 10:00.
