Late Run Lifts Merrimack Over UMass Lowell, 70-65

Senior G Gennifer Roy scored 27 points to lead Merrimack College over UMass Lowell, 70-65, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball tilt at the Tsongas Center.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the NE-10 entering next Wednesday's home clash with Saint Anselm (5:30).

Merrimack improved to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the Conference and visits Saint Michael's Tuesday (5:30).

The loss spoiled a career-high 20 points for sophomore G Danielle DePierro (Tewksbury, Mass.), who converted 8 of 13 field goals (3 of 5 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 free throws.

Junior G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, Conn.) came off the bench to scored 14 points and dish six assists while junior F Brianna Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.

Roy converted 12 of 16 field goals for the Warriors while junior F Kelly Schatzlein added 18 points and grabbed 22 rebounds (six offensive).

The Warriors shot .500 for the game (28-56), including .560 for the second half (14-25) while UMass Lowell shot .386 (27-70) and .381 in the second half (16-42). Merrimack also outscored UMass Lowell from the free throw line, shooting 12-18 opposed to the River Hawks' 5-8.

Merrimack had a 59-58 lead with 2:34 left to play and used a 9-2 spurt to snatch a 68-60 lead with 28 seconds left, after which UMass Lowell was unable to recover. Roy led the run with a jumper and a pair of free throws while freshman G Chloe Rothman opened the spurt with a 3-point shot.

UMass Lowell was unable to pull within five points the rest of the way. The River Hawks led at the break, 29-28.
