Zielinski, Greene Earn NE-10 Weekly Honors

Dec. 14, 2011

Senior Ashley Zielinski (Manchester, N.H.) was named the Track Athlete of the week while sophomore Candace Greene (Annapolis, Md.) was named the Co-Field Athlete of the Week as the Northeast-10 Conference announced its weekly track and field honors Tuesday.

The honors come following a host of stellar results at the Brandeis University Reggie Poyau Saturday, at which the UMass Lowell women placed second and the men fourth.

Zielinski won the 55 meter dash in 7.35 seconds and moved on to win the 200 meter dash in 26.45 seconds. She also finished runner-up in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.42 seconds, just behind sophomore teammate Elisabeth Monty (Charlton, Mass.), who won in 8.35 seconds.

Greene, named the NE-10 Field Athlete of the week last week, won her second shot put title in as many weeks as she threw for a distance of 45 feet, 4.5’’ and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship.

Currently, Greene ranks ninth among NCAA Division II throwers.

Two River Hawks – a senior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Peter (North Attleboro, Mass.) – were named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll. MacDonald won the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:33.83, while Peter captured the weight throw with a distance of 52’ 10.0’’.

UMass Lowell returns to action Sunday, Jan. 8 at the Dartmouth Relays.
