The Northeast-10 honored Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.) as its Player of the Week and Carrie Dresser (Plaistow, N.H.) as the Rookie of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. The duo played key roles in UMass Lowell's wins at Saint Anselm, 6-3, and Southern Connecticut St., 9-1.
McCarthy, who was honored for the second consecutive week, moved from forward to midfield due to an injured teammate and still managed to lead the offense with three goals and three assists for nine points. She kicked off the week with two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in the 6-3 win at Saint Anselm. The sophomore followed with a goal and two assists in the 9-1 victory at Southern Connecticut St.
Dresser played in just one game last week, but shined as a standout defender in the River Hawks' 9-1 win over the Owls. She played major minutes while holding Southern Connecticut St. to only four shots on goal and five penalty corners.
For the season, McCarthy leads the NE-10 in points (40), goals (15) and assists (10). She is currently riding a five-game scoring streak with 12 goals and six assists.
Dresser has appeared in six games this season, aiding a defense that has held opponents to five total goals in those games--including three shutouts.
Prior to Tuesday, UMass Lowell had been honored twice already this year. Classmates Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) and McCarthy were named the Player of the Week on Sept. 7 and Sept. 27, respectively.
The fourth-ranked River Hawks (10-1, 4-0) are riding a 10-game winning streak and host conference foe St. Michael's tonight at 6 p.m. on Cushing Field.
