Junior M Luke Perry scored the lone goal in the 99th minute to lead Southern Connecticut State University over UMass Lowell, 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer clash at Jess Dow Field.
The loss was the second straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 8-6-0 overall and 8-4-0 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday night’s non-conference home clash against Dominican (7:00).
Southern Connecticut halted a three-match winless streak and improved to 6-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the Conference.
The Owls scored the winner when junior D Francisco Lara took possession on the left side sent a cross to an unmarked Perry, who headed home at the far post.
UMass Lowell’s best opportunity came in the ninth minute when sophomore M Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) broke down the left side of the box alone, but slotted wide of the far post.
“In possession, we were pretty adroit,” said head coach Christian Figueroa. “We were creating some opportunities out wide and I felt we had most of the possession.”
Southern Connecticut held an 11-10 edge on shots and a 7-6 clip on target. UMass Lowell had a 6-3 edge on corner kicks.
Sophomore GK Connor Askins (Boston, Mass.) had six saves for UMass Lowell while senior GK Andrew Esposito also stopped six shots for the Owls.
