UMass Lowell scored two goals in the first half and never looked back en route to a 3-1 victory over Assumption Thursday night in a non-conference field hockey clash at Assumption’s Multi-Sport Stadium.
With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 14-3 overall and hosts its regular season finale against American International Saturday (1:00) at Cushing Field. With a victory over the Yellow Jackets, coupled with a Merrimack loss (at Adelphi) Sunday, the River Hawks can earn a share of the NE-10 regular season title.
Assumption suffered its ninth straight setback and slipped to 1-13.
UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the 21st minute when junior D Sarah Wilcox (Old Town, Maine) converted off good work from sophomore F Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.).
Sophomore Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) gave the River Hawks a 2-0 lead going into the half with an unassisted goal, her 15th of the year.
Assumption pulled one back in the 52nd minute when Senior M Amanda Whaley scored her first of the year with help from freshman F Paige Anderson.
The River Hawks sealed the win in the 68th when sophomore F Cori Trask (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored her fifth of the season with an assist to senior D Kayla Littig (Carver, Mass.).
UMass Lowell outshot Assumption 25-5 overall and 16-5 on target. Sophomore GK Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) had four saves for UMass Lowell while freshman Lauren Neilan stopped 13 shots for the Greyhounds.
The River Hawks also built a 20-7 advantage on corners.
