Giaquinto, Judge In Stellar Form at GBTC Invitational

Junior Nicole Giaquinto (Winthrop, Mass.) won the 200 meter dash invitational and topped the collegiate field in the 60 meter dash to lead the UMass Lowell women’s track and field team at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational Sunday at Harvard’s Gordon Track & Tennis Center.

The meet drew colleges from all three NCAA divisions as well as many athletes representing postgraduate track and field clubs from the Northeast region.

Giaquinto was one of two UMass Lowell athletes who won outright titles on the day and five who emerged as the top Division II or III athletes in their events.

Giaquinto and sophomore Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro, Mass.) were the sole collegiate sprinters in the 200 invitational field. Giaquinto captured the 200 in 25.46 seconds while Cunningham placed fifth in 25.99 seconds.

Additionally, Giaquinto placed fourth overall and tops among collegiate runners in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.11 seconds.

UMass Lowell also found success in the open 200 meter dash behind junior Amy Delgado (Bridgewater, Mass.), who won with a time of 26.63 seconds.

Freshman Karie Judge (Tewksbury, Mass.) was the top college athlete in the 800 meter invitational as she placed fifth overall in a personal-best 2:17.39. She also ran a 62.0-second leg on UMass Lowell’s 4X440 team which took third overall and first among Division II-III foursomes in 4:16.09.

Joining her was freshman Diamond Jones (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Brittany Caprio (Newbury, Mass.) who each ran 65.0 legs, and senior Amy Pflanz (Burlington, Mass.) a 63.8 split.

Freshman Elisabeth Monty (Charlton, Mass.) also enjoyed a busy day, highlighted by placing first among collegiate entries (third overall) in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.03 seconds. She also took fourth overall in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 4.75 inches, just ahead of Jones, who placed sixth with a leap of 34’ 8.5’’.

Freshman Candace Greene (Annapolis, Md.) continued her run of stellar results in the shot put as she won the collegiate field and placed second with a throw of 39’ 8.5’’, just behind Stacey Connor (41’ 0.5’’) of the Greater Boston Track Club. Junior Bethani Staiti (Barre, Mass.) placed third with a toss of 38’ 8.75’’ and sophomore Robyn Ciriello (Salem, N.H.) fifth with a distance of 37’ 11.5’’.

Freshman Janelle Clarkson (Seekonk, Mass.), senior Lauren Raimondi (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Marissa Avery (Colrain, Mass.) finished third through fourth in the high jump. Clarkson cleared 5’ 5.75’’, just a quarter-inch from matching her personal-best, while Raimondi and Avery each cleared 5’ 3.75’’ to share fourth.

Raimondi also placed third in the long jump with a distance of 16’ 11.5’’.

In other events, sophomore Kelly Walton (Nahant, Mass.) and junior Emily Lukin (Attleboro, Mass.) placed fifth and seventh in the open 800 meters, Walton in 2:26.46 and Lukin in 2:28.91.

UMass Lowell enters the Boston University Terrier Invitational Friday at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
