Late Surge Lifts Le Moyne Over UMass Lowell, 61-56

Senior G Courtney Coryea registered 17 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead Le Moyne College over UMass Lowell, 61-56, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at Ted Grant Court.

The loss was the second straight for UMass Lowell, which slipped to 6-10 overall and 5-7 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s home game against the College of Saint Rose (2:00).

Le Moyne improved to 6-10 overall and 3-9 in the Conference.

Sophomore F Sarah Bennett (Newark, Ohio) led UMass Lowell with 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior F Sha’Nay Bushner (Akron, Ohio) added 12 points and nine rebounds – one rebound shy of her third straight double-double – before drawing her fifth foul with 3:23 left to play.

Sophomore G Brianna Calver (Shelby, Ohio) dished out a career-high 10 assists in addition to three points and two rebounds while sophomore G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, Conn.) chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Junior G Morgan Rowland scored 16 points and grabbed three rebounds for Le Moyne.

The Dolphins outscored UMass Lowell at the free throw line 22-5 – including 15-4 in the second half – and forced 20 turnovers out of the River Hawks. "Defensively, we put them on the line too many times," said UML Head Coach Kathy O'Neil.

UMass Lowell led 29-27 at the break and 37-33 with 14:07 left to play before going on a 10-4 run to post a 47-37 cushion with 10:56 remaining. Sophomore G Erika Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) led the run with consecutive 3-point shots while sophomore F Brianna Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) added a pair of layups.

The River Hawks nursed a seven-point lead (52-45) with 4:28 left to play, but Le Moyne scored 10 straight points, led by a trey and four free throws by Rowland, to grab a 55-52 lead with 3:23 left to play.

Simmons tied the score with a 3-point shot with 1:38 left to play, but the Dolphins converted 6 of 8 free throws in the final 56 seconds to seal the win while the River Hawks misfired on three field goal attempts.
