Senior F Brianne Bozzella (Wilmington, Mass.) scored the lone goal 3 minutes, 36 seconds into overtime as UMass Lowell defeated Bentley College, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer opener in Waltham.
With the victory, UMass Lowell evened its record to 1-1-1 entering Friday night's pivotal clash against No. 3 Saint Rose (7:00), the River Hawks fourth match in a nine-day stretch. Bentley slipped to 0-1-0.
All three of UMass Lowell's matches this season have reached overtime. On Thursday, the River Hawks played to a 0-0 deadlock in double overtime with C.W. Post and followed with a 2-1 OT loss Saturday to the University of Bridgeport.
"We kept a shutout away from home and started the NE-10 schedule on a positive note," said UML Head Coach Elie Monteiro. "We got three points that were well deserved. We were pleased to leave Waltham with a `W', which was the goal to being with."
Junior M Amy Cramer (Marlboro, Mass.) was the catalyst for the goal as she played the ball to Bozzella, whose initial shot was stopped by Bentley goalkeeper Kara Smith. Bozzella, however, picked up the rebound and tucked it past Smith from eight yards out for the game-winner.
The River Hawks outshot the Falcons 20-5 overall and 10-4 on target. Smith had nine saves for Bentley while freshman Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.) scored her second shutout of the season with four saves.
