Freshmen Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) and Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.) helped the No. 3 River Hawks improve to 3-0 overall on Monday afternoon, with a 1-0 victory over the Millersville Marauders.
The non-conference game, played at Indiana University (Pa.), evened Millersville’s record to 1-1 on the year.
McCarthy’s first collegiate goal, which was unassisted, came in the first half and was all the offense UMass Lowell needed to earn its third victory this week.
Classmate Hopkins earned her third shutout in as many games, making four saves in the complete game effort. Millersville’s Sarah Dickinson allowed just one goal on 15 shots on cage, but earned the loss.
The River Hawks outshot the Marauders 27-7 in the game, including a 14-3 advantage in the first half. UMass Lowell also held the slight edge in penalty corners, earning seven opportunities compared to Millersville’s six.
Next on the agenda, the River Hawks will play Southern Connecticut in a non-conference tilt on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in New Haven.
