Scales: 'The performances are inconsistent'
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-5-1 entering Tuesday's match at Stonehill (4:00). AIC improved to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Conference and hosts New Haven Wednesday at 7:00.
Sophomore M Conor Doyle (Douglas, Isle of Mann) scored two goals and assisted on one for the Yellow Jackets while senior F Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass.) also scored two.
AIC opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when junior M Thomas Denomme (North Smithfield, R.I.) crossed to Stevenson, who got between a pair of defenders and headed home into the top right corner.
UMass Lowell attacked off straight off the kick after halftime and nearly leveled in the first minute. Sophomore Ryan McLeod (Haverhill, Mass.) stole and errant pass in the AIC zone and unleashed a shot from the top of the box which deflected off a defender toward the low left corner.
The deflection threw off junior GK James Taber (Liverpool, N.Y.), but he was able to recover and parry the attempt around the left post.
AIC doubled its lead in the 60th minute when Stevenson beat the offsides trap on the right side with a through-ball from Doyle, and uncorked a blast inside the left post.
In the 76th, sophomore M Ryan Cronin (Attleboro, Mass.) flicked a goalkick from Taber to Doyle, who broke free of the UMass Lowell defense and tucked inside the right post.
Doyle completed the scoring in the 82nd when sophomore M Callum Congreve released him with a through-ball on the right side of the box, which Doyle slotted inside the left post.
UMass Lowell nearly pulled a goal back in the final minute when freshman D Neil Lavanchy (Scituate, Mass.) crossed to senior F Stephen Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.), whose header was agonizingly wide right.
AIC outshot the River Hawks 13-7 overall and 8-2 on target. Freshman Connor Askins (Boston, Mass.), making his collegiate debut, had four saves while Taber was tested twice.
