Senior Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) netted the game-winner, as four of her teammates also recorded tallies in a well-balanced, 5-1 victory over American International College (3-3, 1-1 NE-10) in Springfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 3 River Hawks (8-0, 1-0 NE-10) opened their Northeast-10 Conference schedule for the year.
Senior Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) opened scoring just over seven minutes into the game, scoring an unassisted goal to put her squad up 1-0 at 7:12. She grabbed the rebound off a shot by classmate Macy and notched her 10th goal of the year.
Macy followed up less than three minutes later, tallying her 10th of the year with a goal assisted by freshman Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.) at 10:04. McCarthy added another assist, feeding the ball to Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, N.H.) at 17:20, putting the River Hawks up 3-0.
Just 23 seconds later, Enaire grabbed a rebound off a shot by Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, Mass.) and found freshman Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.), who scored her second collegiate goal to give UMass Lowell a four-goal advantage at 17:43.
As the clock wound down in the first half, the Yellow Jackets capitalized on their presence in the circle, as Amanda McLean put her squad on the board and made it a 4-1 game, just 28 seconds before the horn.
After the break, the River Hawks stayed strong and held AIC without a shot, while Liz Day (North Andover, Mass.) scored just 1:18 into the half. The River Hawks earned a penalty corner at 35:45 and kept pressure on the goal, helping Day to her seventh tally of the season.
UMass Lowell held the decisive 22-2 advantage in shots in the game, as well as the 9-0 edge in penalty corners. Despite only earning two in the first half, they went on to seven corners in the second half.
NE-10 Rookie/Goalkeeper of the Week Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) stopped one of the two shots she faced, while AIC’s Kim Steiner stopped 12 of 17 shots she faced before allowing Nicole Spence between the pipes for 2:39, as she made one save on the only shot she faced.
The River Hawks will host Saint Michael’s College on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. on Cushing Field, continuing non-conference play.
