Sophomore M Sean Dougherty scored the lone goal in the 51st minute as Dowling College defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer season-opener at the Golden Lions Sports Complex.

UMass Lowell slipped to 0-1 thus far and visits Dominican College Tuesday at 3:30. Dowling improved to 1-0 and hosts Saint Michael's Saturday at 7:00.

Dowling outshot the River Hawks, 14-9 overall and 4-0 on target. Freshman GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, NY), making his collegiate debut, had three saves. UMass Lowell, however, had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Dougherty scored the winner on a failed clearance, which went to freshman F Gerassimos Magoulas, who found Dougherty at the top left corner of the box. Dougherty sidestepped a defender and slotted inside the far right post.

"Other than the goal, the second half for us was much better," said Head Coach Bryan Scales. "We did open the game with a good sequence and we took it to them late. We had some good, solid performances. It would've been nice to have come out of there with a draw.

"This was a starting point against a Dowling team that was much better than last year. Hopefully, we'll get it going on Tuesday at Dominican," he added.
