Sept. 18, 2010

Box Score

Senior midfielder Liz Day (North Andover, Mass.) notched a hat trick, while her team, the No. 3 UMass Lowell River Hawks, improved to 6-0 on the year with a 4-0 win over Saint Anselm (0-2) in non-conference action in Manchester, N.H. on Saturday afternoon.

The River Hawks outshot their opponent 44-3 on the day, en route to capturing their fifth shutout in six games. Freshman goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) stopped all three shots that came her way, while Saint Anselm’s Megan Sullivan made an impressive 19 stops on the 23 shots that reached the cage.

Day began her impressive showing just under 10 minutes into the game, scoring her first tally at 9:33, assisted by Northeast-10 Player of the Week Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.). She struck again 10 minutes later, notching her second goal of the game, assisted by Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, Mass.). Finally, Day wasted no time, completing her natural hat trick less than two minutes later with an unassisted tally to put her squad up 3-0 going into the half.

Senior forward Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) added some cushioning for the River Hawks, scoring early in the second half to put UMass Lowell up 4-0, a score they would hold onto until time expired.

The River Hawks owned dominant advantages in shots (44-3) – including a 22-1 edge in the first half – and penalty corners (20-2). The latter was helpful to get their offense rolling, as their first two goals of the afternoon stemmed from penalty corners.

Next for the River Hawks is a home contest against the Stonehill Skyhawks on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. on Cushing Field. This will be their first home game since the season-opener on Sept. 3.
