Box Score

Adelphi scored two unanswered goals in either half to en route to a 3-1 victory over UMass Lowell Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer clash in Garden City, NY.

The loss was the third straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 1-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday’s match at American International College (7:00). Adelphi improved to 2-2-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the Conference.

The match started quickly as both teams scored within the first three minutes. Adelphi jumped to a 1-0 lead just 1:52 into the match when senior F Kim Volinski took advantage of a defensive miscue and slotted past freshman GK Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.).

The River Hawks, however, retaliated less than a minute later when sophomores Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) and Gia O’Connor (Dracut, Mass.) were each denied by junior GK Dorothy Connolly in succession. Sophomore Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass.), however, was there for O’Connor’s rebound which she tucked past Connolly to level.

Adelphi took the lead again in the 29th minute when senior M Brianne McDonnell rounded a defender and crossed to Volinski who finished nicely.

McDonnell capped the scoring in the 69th minute when she took a cross from sophomore M Meghan Carey and freed herself in the box to slot home.

Adelphi played conservatively from then on as UMass Lowell pushed forward, evidenced by three shots and three corner kicks (to Adelphi’s none), but could not muster another goal.

The River Hawks outshot the Panthers 13-6 overall and 7-6 on target. Butlin had three saves for UMass Lowell while Connolly had six saves.
