Sept. 15, 2010 Box Score

Senior F Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I.) scored the lone goal on a breakaway in the 66th minute to lead Stonehill College over UMass Lowell, 1-0, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at Cushing Field.

Monteiro: 'They were hungrier'

The loss was the second straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's match at Adelphi (12:00).

Stonehill improved to 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the NE-10 and hosts Pace University Saturday at 2:00.

Junior M Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass.) set up the winner when she sent a volley over the UMass Lowell defense to enable St. Martin to beat the offsides trap and go in alone on freshman GK Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.). St. Martin rounded the Charging Butlin and slotted into an empty net from the right side.

The goal came against the run of play as the River Hawks had two attempts to go ahead in the minutes prior. In the 61st minute, junior M Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, Mass.) uncorked a blast from 30 yards out headed for the top right corner, but junior GK Sarah Hickey was well prepared.

Three minutes later, Bissaillon sent a cross from the right flank to senior D Ella Merullo (Wakefield, Mass.), whose header drew a diving save from Hickey.

Sophomore M Amy Cramer (Marlboro, Mass.) had UMass Lowell's best chance in the first half when her blast from 25 yards out soared toward the top right corner, but Hickey anticipated well.

The River Hawks enjoyed a 16-5 advantage on shots (8-3 on target) as well as an 8-1 edge on corner kicks. Butlin had two saves while Hickey stopped eight shots.
