The River Hawk baseball club (18-12, 7-6 NE-10) earned a hard fought win on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Saint Anselm Hawks (5-18, 3-9 NE-10) at LeLacheur Park, 4-3. Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) hit his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field and Ted Haley (Cranston, RI) pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win.

"To have Haley show up the way he did was crucial," said head coach Ken Harring. "He had the mannerisms, he wanted the ball and he attacked the strike zone for the first time all year. He really picked us up and hopefully that's a sign of things to come for him."

Saint Anselm picked up two early runs in the top of the first after starter Dan White (Southboro, MA) surrendered three consecutive hits to begin the game. The first run came home on an errant pickoff throw to first base, allowing Mike Garczynski (Fort Myers, FL) to scamper home from third. Matt Scharewicz (Peabody, MA) followed a few batters later with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field that granted the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The River Hawks erased the deficit with one swing in the bottom of the second inning. JT Leary (Newburyport, MA) worked a one-out walk, setting up Notargiacomo for the dramatics. Notargiacomo took left-hander John Healy (Cranston, RI) deep with a blast that ricocheted high off the left field scoreboard for a two-run home run. The senior catcher is now hitting .409 against lefties this season.

Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) kept the ball rolling after the home run, delivering a single up the middle to bring home Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, MA) from second. Wallace then stole second base and Jordan Silva (Groveland, MA) ringed a single past the pitcher to plate another River Hawk run. UMass Lowell emerged from the second inning with a 4-2 lead.

Saint Anselm cut the lead in half in the third after notching a pair of hits and a hit batter to load the bases with no outs. White surrendered a RBI sacrifice fly to Robert Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), but then got the next batter to ground into a double-play to escape the jam.

The Hawks would never get closer as Haley and Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) combined to shut them out over the final six innings to preserve the victory. White pitched three innings, allowed six hits and three runs, two earned. Haley improved to 1-2 on the season with the win, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Nunes set down Saint Anselm 1-2-3 in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his first save of the season.

The River Hawks have little time to enjoy the win as they hit the road tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. contest at Mercy College.
