UMass Lowell baseball (17-12, 6-6 NE-10) picked up a crucial conference victory at Saint Anselm (5-17, 3-8 NE-10) on Wednesday, 3-2. Junior Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning with a RBI double to center field.
"It was a well played game on both sides," said head coach Ken Harring. "It was big for our confidence to get the two-out base hit to drive in the winning run. In terms of our season, it gets us back to .500 in the conference and any road win in this league is good win."
The River Hawks jumped on the board first, bringing home two runs in the second inning. Seniors Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) and JT Leary (Newburyport, MA) led off with a pair of singles to start the frame, setting up runners on first and second with no outs. Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) plated the first run with a single to right field, bringing home Notargiacomo from second. Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, MA) hit into a fielder's choice at second base during the next at bat, allowing Leary to score on the play.
Saint Anselm tied the game in the fourth on a two-run double to left-center by James Garrigan (Plymouth, MA).
With the score deadlocked in the seventh, Sanborn singled to left with one out. Jordan Silva (Groveland, MA) followed with a bunt single, moving Sanborn into scoring position at second base. After a pop up, Burns stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a clutch RBI double to center field, ultimately win the game for UMass Lowell, 3-2.
Starting pitcher Garrett Cole (Manchester, NH) pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. He was relieved by Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) who picked up the win with five and a third innings of scoreless ball.
The two teams will become familiar quickly as they square off once more tomorrow afternoon at LeLacheur Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
