Pitchers' Offensive Power Helps Softball Split with Stonehill, 6-5, 8-3

The UMass Lowell River Hawks (10-14, 3-3 Northeast-10) picked up an 8-3 victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks (7-9-1, 2-4 NE-10) after dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 6-5, in conference action in Easton on Monday afternoon. Freshman P Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA) tallied three RBI on the day, going 5-5 from the plate with two homeruns, while sophomore Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) went 2-6 with a homer and four RBI on the day.

In the first game of the afternoon, Stonehill enjoyed a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to top UMass Lowell 6-5. The Skyhawks notched six runs on 14 hits, while the River Hawks converted five runs on just six hits in the game.

Bryan went 2-2 at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in a RBI of her own, as well, thanks to a homerun in the fourth. Fellow hurler Boris slammed a two-run homer in the second to give the River Hawks an early 2-0 lead, but the Skyhawks came back in the third before the squads traded ties and leads in the second half of the game.

Bryan pitched nearly a complete game, going 6.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and six runs in the game. The rookie struck out two, walked four and now stands at 5-8 on the year. Stonehill’s Samantha Krantz, who pitched the final two innings for the Skyhawks, picked up her third win of the year after allowing just one hit in her two shutout innings of work.

In the second game of the afternoon, the River Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Bryan was perfect at the plate once again, going 3-3 with two RBI and one run scored. She tallied her second homerun of the day, a two-run shot, in the third inning, helping her squad go up 4-0.

Boris started the game, picking up her fourth win of the year, after pitching five innings. She allowed three runs and eight hits, striking out four and walking just two batters. She was relieved in the sixth by Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA), who pitched two shutout innings. The sophomore struck out two batters and walked just one in the game.

Boris went 1-3 with two RBI in the second game, bringing her total to four on the day, while Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) went 3-4 with a run scored in the late game. Meagan Guy (Berlin, CT) also notched two RBI in the contest, going 2-3 from the plate.

The River Hawks tallied 13 hits in the game, converting the offensive showcase into eight runs and not making any errors in the field. Stonehill tallied three runs on eight hits, but UMass Lowell was able to capitalize on the Skyhawks’ two errors in the game.

UMass Lowell will host a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire at 3/5:00 p.m. to open the 2010 season at River View Field on Wednesday afternoon.
