Junior Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) won the shot put and eclipsed the school record as UMass Lowell placed third at the Fitchburg State College Jim Sheehan Memorial Track and Field Meet Saturday afternoon.

Murray was among three titlists for the River Hawks, who compiled 104 points to place behind only Bates (187) and Wheaton (112). Southern Maine (93) took fourth while the College of Saint Rose (76) placed fifth and the hosts sixth (70.50).

Murray, who won his second title in as many weeks, threw for a distance of 53 feet, 8.0 inches to edge the previous school record of 53' 0.75'' set in 2008. He also exceeded the NCAA provisional mark and currently ranks 12th in the country.

Also impressing was UMass Lowell's 4X400 meter relay team, which placed first in 3:14.81 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with the 13th-best time in the country. Senior Doug Caves (Oxford, MA) led off and was joined by junior Donte Brown (Raynham, MA), sophomore Jeff Wundt (Southwick, MA) and freshman Craig Bennett (Milton, MA).

Caves and Brown also impressed in the 200 meter dash, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Caves posted a time of 21.88 seconds - the fifth-fastest result in school history - while Brown finished in 22.20.

Senior Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) also won his second title in as many weeks as he captured the 1,500 meters in 3:67.57 and led four River Hawks in the top nine places. Junior Greg Wilson (Chelmsford, MA) placed fourth in 4:04.91 while sophomore Eric McDonald (Groveland, MA) took eighth (4:08.77) and freshman Chris Estrella (Lowell, MA) ninth (4:09.33).

Wilson and McDonald also ran legs on UMass Lowell's 4X800 meter relay team, which took third in 8:23.48. Joining them was senior Ben Saviet (Sutton, MA) and sophomore Zachary Sylvestre (Gardner, MA).

Saviet, making his first appearance of the season, also placed second overall and tops among collegiate runners in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:39.82.

Junior Matt Blazon (Lowell, MA) also enjoyed a stellar day, placing second in both the 110 meter hurdles (15.68 seconds) and the 400 meter hurdles (56.17). Senior Justin Oliver (Lowell, MA) was close behind in the 400 in fourth (56.83).

Senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) took third in both the long jump (22' 1.5'') and the triple jump (42' 11.0''). Sophomore Danny Wang (Haverhill, MA) placed fourth in the 800 meters in 1:56.74.

UMass Lowell hosts the George Davis Invitational next Saturday.
