Audio Recap - The River Hawk Report - April 6, 2010
The baseball River Hawks (16-12, 5-6 NE-10) spilt a pair of games with Merrimack College (9-6, 5-4 NE-10) at LeLacheur Park on Monday evening. The game one win, 11-4, was a conference victory while the 6-2 loss in the nightcap was non-conference.
In the opening contest, the River Hawks picked up pair of runs in the second to take the lead, 2-0. Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, MA) singled, Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) was hit with a pitch and Jordan Silva (Groveland, MA) walked to load the bases with one out. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) broke the tie with an infield single to the shortstop, bringing Sanborn home. The River Hawks picked up another run on a fielder's choice hit by JT Leary (Newburyport, MA) for his 23rd RBI.
The Warriors got one back in the third, kick started by a one-out triple from Ray Walker (Lowell, MA). Walker was brought home on the next play, a sacrifice fly to center field by Paul Acre (West Hartford, CT), cutting the lead to 2-1.
UMass Lowell erupted in the bottom of the third for three more runs. Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Cam Kneeland (Rowley, MA). Notargiacomo put two more on the board with a line drive two-run home run over the left field fence to extend the lead to 5-1.
Kneeland picked up an RBI in the fourth on a single through the left side to bring home Wallace.
Merrimack looked to chip away at the River Hawk lead in the fifth with a home run to left field by Mike Dooling (Milford, CT). The round-tripper was only the Warriors' second hit of the game and cut the lead to 6-2.
UMass Lowell's bats refused to be silenced as they scored five more runs over the final four innings. The scoring was highlighted by RBI doubles from Kneeland and Sanborn.
Sophomore Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) picked up his second win of the season, pitching seven and a third innings while allowing four runs. Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) closed out the final inning and two-thirds, holding the Warriors scoreless.
For the game, the Warrior pitching staff hit seven River Hawk batters.
The nightcap started with a reversal of fortunes with Merrimack jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Matt Hogan (Andover, MA) connected on a three-run home run over the left field wall.
The River Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the first as Kneeland hit a ground out to second that brought Wallace home from third, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Warrior offense began to pull away as they picked up three runs over the next five innings. Among their key hits, Hogan ratcheted off a RBI triple to right-center in the sixth.
Junior hurler Ted Haley (Cranston, RI) struggled on the mound in the nightcap, pitching just five plus innings. Haley allowed six runs, five earned, while striking out six batters. He was relieved by Ryan Stoller (Milton, MA) who completed the final four innings, holding Merrimack scoreless while striking out two batters.
UMass Lowell will look to bounce back tomorrow as they travel to Saint Anselm for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
