The UMass Lowell River Hawks (9-13, 2-2 Northeast-10) fell to the Merrimack Warriors (7-10, 3-1 NE-10) twice in North Andover on Saturday afternoon. The River Hawks dropped an 8-6 decision in the early game and fell 6-5 in the second tilt, despite rallying back from a 5-0 deficit.
Freshman P Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA) pitched the first game, went three innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. She fell to 5-7 on the year with the loss and was relieved by Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY), who pitched two innings and let up a pair of runs on one hit. Sophomore Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) pitched a scoreless final inning after allowing two hits.
The River Hawks jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homerun by freshman Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, MA), but the Warriors answered back with a three-run longball in the bottom of the inning. Classmate Bryan also tallied a pair of RBI on a homerun and a triple in the game.
The Warriors’ offense was consistent, scoring in each of the first four innings, while Kara Melillo swatted three homeruns over the course of the doubleheader. Alex Gallant got the win for Merrimack, improving to 2-2 on the year.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Warriors jumped to a 5-0 lead through the second, before UMass Lowell began to chip away at the lead. The River Hawks tallied three runs in the third, but were unable to overcome the Merrimack lead.
Boris (3-3) threw the complete game, allowing six runs on nine hits and struck out three batters, while Merrimack’s Atlee Cahill earned her first victory of the year.
Senior Katelyn Hebert (Lowell, MA) went 2-3 with two RBI in the game, while sophomore Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Classmate Meagan Guy (Berlin, CT) went 2-4 in the game, while Bryan had the same.
The River Hawks look to bounce back with a doubleheader against Stonehill on Monday, April 5 in Easton, beginning at 3:00 p.m. They will then host Southern New Hampshire for the home opener on Wednesday at 3/5:00 p.m.
