Boris Shuts Down Ravens as Softball Tramples Franklin Pierce, 8-0

Run support was not an issue for the River Hawks on Thursday afternoon, as they routed the Ravens of Franklin Pierce, 8-0 on Thursday afternoon, backing up a stellar performance by sophomore P Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA). The game, a makeup from Tuesday afternoon, completed the season series between the squads, which they split one game apiece.

The River Hawks now stand at 22-23 on the year with a 14-12 mark in Northeast-10 Conference action, while the Ravens fall to 14-27 overall and 9-19 in NE-10 play.

NE-10 Player of the Week Boris threw a gem for the River Hawks, allowing just two hits in five innings. She struck out four an did not walk a single Franklin Pierce batter. Kayla Johnson started the game for the Ravens and was relieved in the first by Jessica Wiley. Johnson allowed six runs on six hits in the first, while Wiley pitched four innings and allowed just two runs on five hits.

The first inning was a seven-run downpour for the River Hawks, as they tallied seven runs through the first eight batters of the frame. Senior Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) went 2-2 in the first inning alone, as the squad batted through the order before the Ravens could close the inning. They notched consecutive triples by Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, MA) and Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA). They left the inning with a 7-0 lead and never looked back.

In the fourth inning, UMass Lowell added an insurance run, as NE-10 Freshman of the Week Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, MA) scored on a Mahoney single through the right side. The 8-0 lead allowed the River Hawks to invoke the mercy rule and complete the game in five innings.

Mahoney finished the game 3-3 with a pair of RBI, while MacKenize went 1-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Hebert finished the day 2-3 with a run scored, while seven different River Hawks recorded runs batted in and seven different batters crossed the plate.

The squad will return to the diamond for their final two regular season doubleheaders, beginning with Pace on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on River View Field. Local high school and youth teams are invited to come out, support the River Hawks and meet the team after the games wrap up. They will return to action the following day, hosting the Adelphi Panthers beginning at noon on Sunday. As the final regular season home games, Sunday will also serve as senior day.
