Leathersich Masterful as River Hawks Defeat Ravens, 5-3

April 27, 2010

Box Score

River Hawk baseball (25-19, 12-12 NE-10) pulled out a dramatic late inning victory, 5-3, at Franklin Pierce (31-12-1, 17-6-1 NE-10) on Tuesday, keeping their postseason hopes alive. Cam Kneeland (Rowley, MA) knocked a two-run triple in the ninth inning to propel UMass Lowell to the win.

The River Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a pair of RBI fielder's choice hits by Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Sean Burns (Colchester, VT).

UMass Lowell would hold the lead till the seventh inning where the Ravens notched three hits and two runs on an RBI single by Phil Hendricks (Pittsfield, ME) and a RBI sacrifice fly by Mike Augustine (Kingston, NY).

Starting pitcher Jack Leathersich (Beverly, MA) allowed three runs, two earned, over eight plus innings while striking out 11 batters. Outside of a troublesome seventh inning, the hard throwing lefty allowed just one hit.

With the game locked in a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth, UMass Lowell looked to grab the lead. Wallace got the ball rolling with a two-out RBI single to right field to take a 3-2 advantage. Then, after Felix Martinez (Miami, FL) drew a walk, Kneeland delivered with a two-run triple to left-centerfield, adding to his team-high 38 RBI.

Leathersich handed over the ball to Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) midway through the ninth to shut down the Ravens for the save. Monico had some brief difficulty, but got Augustine to ground into a double play to seal the win.

The River Hawks will take several days off before returning to the field, traveling to American International for their final two games of the 2010 regular season on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
