The UMass Lowell River Hawks (21-23, 13-12 Northeast-10) fell to the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University (14-24, 9-16 NE-10) in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader on River View Field Tuesday afternoon. The second game of the afternoon was called due to inclement weather and has been postponed until Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Tuesday’s tilt was scoreless through five, but the Ravens notched their first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning to capture the 1-0 lead they would hold on to through game’s end.
NE-10 Player of the Week Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) pitched the complete game and let up just four hits and one run to the Ravens. She struck out three and walked one in the contest. With the loss, she falls to 8-10 on the year. Franklin Pierce’s Kayla Johnson improved to 6-11 on the year after pitching all seven innings, allowing six hits and no runs. She walked five River Hawks and struck out three.
The rookie duo of Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, MA) and NE-10 Freshman of the Week Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, MA) continued their consistent batting, as Mahoney with 2-4 and MacKenzie tallied a pair of doubles after going 2-3.
Next up for the River Hawks, the squad will play their final regular-season non-conference doubleheader against Post University at 2:30 p.m. on River View Field tomorrow afternoon, followed by the second game of the Franklin Pierce series at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
