The UMass Lowell River Hawks (18-21, 10-10 Northeast-10) split a conference doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets of American International College (19-21, 12-10 NE-10) on Thursday afternoon on River View Field. The Yellow Jackets came from behind in the first contest, but the River Hawks’ bats came alive to capture the second game of the afternoon.

In the first tilt of the day, the Yellow Jackets jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first but Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) brought her team back up on top with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the second. The blast was her first collegiate homerun and also scored Kristi Kyzer (Boxborough, MA), who reached earlier in the inning with a bloop single to third.

The Yellow Jackets rallied in the top of the seventh, piecing together a two-run inning to lift them over the River Hawks, 3-2 lead that they held on to, earning their 19th victory of the year.

Sophomore P Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) pitched the complete game, allowing seven hits and three runs in the game. With the loss, she fell to 7-8 on the year. She struckout three and allowed just three hits and no runs from the second through sixth innings. AIC’s Kristen Dolan got the victory for her complete-game effort, allowing two runs on four hits in the game. She improved to 8-8 on the year.

In the second game of the afternoon, freshman Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, MA) launched her third homerun of the year to open scoring in the game. She hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the first to give the River Hawks the 1-0 lead early on.

In the second inning, Ross reached on a walk and stole second. LF Ashley Daniels (Medford, MA) stepped up to the plate and singled to left, advancing Ross to third before she scored on the throw to home. The River Hawks capped the inning with the 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the following inning, AIC’s Stephanie Belanger blasted her third homerun of the year, a two-run shot, to tie the game at two apiece. In the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets came up with another two-run inning, as Ashleigh St. Peter hit a two-run homerun, her fourth of the year. AIC was up 4-2 in the fourth, but the River Hawks came up swinging.

In the bottom of the inning, UMass Lowell batted through the order, tallying seven runs on six hits in the frame. Boris and Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) each singled before Ross reached on an AIC miscue that brought pinch runner Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) home and opened the floodgates. Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) went on to hit a two-run double to center, while Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, MA) and classmate Mahoney each knocked in runs in the inning, as well. The River Hawks left the inning with the comfortable 9-4 advantage.

In the fifth, AIC strung together a two-out rally, notching three runs on three hits in the top of the inning to bring the game back within two (9-7). UMass Lowell then cushioned its lead back up to an 11-7 advantage thanks to another two-run double by Hebert.

In the following frame, MacKenzie doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, while Mahoney brought her home in the following at bat with a single to left center. The security run gave the River Hawks a 12-7 advantage they held onto for their 18th victory of the year.

Freshman P Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA) earned her ninth victory of the year after pitching four innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. She was relieved by Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY), who pitched one inning and allowed three runs and Boris who finished the game with two shutout innings.

Hebert finished the game with four RBI after going 2-4 and Mahoney went 3-4 with three RBI. Classmate MacKenzie was a perfect 4-4 with one RBI and two runs scored in the game, while Daniels went 2-2 with an RBI and a run.

Following today’s contests, the River Hawks will hit the road for their final road series of the regular season. They take on Saint Rose in Albany for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and then head to Le Moyne for two games starting at noon on Sunday.
