River Hawks Sweep Assumption, 2-1 and 8-3, Snap Losing Streak

April 18, 2010

Box Score

The River Hawk baseball club (21-18, 9-11 NE-10) snapped their six-game losing skid with a pair of victories, 2-1 and 8-3, at Assumption College (12-13, 7-11 NE-10) on Sunday afternoon. Senior Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) led UMass Lowell on the day with five hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Greyhounds took control early in game one, notching a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, MA) smacked a one-out solo home run to right field off of starting pitcher Dustin Ramey (Kingston, NH).

It took a few innings, but UMass Lowell finally responded in the sixth with two runs to assume the 2-1 advantage on the scoreboard. Notargiacomo led off with a double to right field and JT Leary (Newburyport, MA) walked. With one out, Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, NY) singled to left, bringing home Notargiacomo and moving Leary to second base. Leary came home on an error during a fielder's choice by Felix Martinez (Miami, FL) a few pitches later.

After the first inning home run, Ramey settled in to hold Assumption scoreless over the final eight frames en route to a complete game victory. The righty improved to 6-3 on the campaign after allowing just seven hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

The River Hawk bats woke up in game two to the tune of eight runs on 10 hits.

After Notargiacomo stole third base, Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) put UMass Lowell on the board with a sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth inning. The River Hawks then expanded their lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a two-run double by Notargiacomo.

UMass Lowell added three more runs in the top of the seventh on key RBI hits from Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) and Leary.

The lead was quickly slashed to 6-3 over the next two innings as the Greyhounds got a big two-run double from Nick Napoli (Medford, MA) in the seventh and a RBI single Frank Flynn (Worcester, MA) in the eighth.

The River Hawks packed on two insurance in the ninth, including von Kriegenbergh's third RBI of the game on a double to left field.

Jack Leathersich (Beverly, MA) earned his second win of the season with a solid start on the mound. The talented lefty pitched six innings, allowing two runs while striking out six and walking two. Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) and Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, MA) closed out the final three innings to seal the victory.

With today's games in the books, the River Hawks will have a couple of days off before they take part in their final non-conference contests of the season. UMass Lowell hosts Concordia (NY) for a double-header on Wednesday afternoon at LeLacheur Park with game one scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
