Sanca, MacDonald, Catarius Hit Provisional Marks at Mt. SAC Relays

April 17, 2010

Senior Ruben Sanca (Boston, MA) and junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, MA) each provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 5,000 meters while senior Haley Catarius (Marshfield, MA) met the provision in the 800 meters to highlight UMass Lowell's effort at the Mount San Antonio College Relays Friday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

The three-day meet drew athletes from all three NCAA divisions as well as many domestic and international athletes representing postgraduate track and field clubs.

Sanca placed 26th overall and third among the three Division II runners in the field with a time of 14:05.39. Amos Sang (13:50.77) of Abilene Christian was the top Division II runner at ninth and Luke Cragg of Adams State (13:54.65) came in 16th.

MacDonald placed 28th overall (fifth among Division II runners) in the University Open section in 14:29.69, currently ranks sixth on the Division II list.

The result marked the third time Sanca has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship. He also ranks eighth in the 1,500 meters and fourth in the 10,000 meters.

The result was a second for MacDonald, who ranks seventh in the 1,500 meters.

Catarius also virtually solidified her place for the NCAA Championship as she placed 15th overall (third) in the University Open 800 Meters in 2:12.05, currently the fifth-fastest result in the country.

Senior Doug Caves (Oxford, MA) wraps UMass Lowell's effort at the Relays Saturday night in the 400 meter dash at 7:31.
