The River Hawks baseball club (19-18, 7-11 NE-10) jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold on as the Merrimack Warriors (13-11, 8-9 NE-10) prevailed, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon. Despite the loss, pitcher Dan White (Southboro, MA) threw a complete game while only allowing two runs and striking out seven.
For the second consecutive day, the River Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Cam Kneeland (Rowley, MA) got the ball rolling with a two-out single to left. Kneeland then stole second base and was hit home on an RBI double by senior Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA).
White ran into trouble in the fourth inning. The senior picked up two quick outs, but then walked back-to-back batters. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Ray Walker (Lowell, MA) knocked a two-run single up the middle to give Merrimack a 2-1 lead.
UMass Lowell was unable to mount a comeback as it failed to advance a runner to second base over the final three innings.
White was spectacular on the afternoon, tossing all eight innings on the mound while allowing just two runs. The right-hander allowed three hits, struck out seven batters and walked only two.
Mired in a six-game losing streak, the River Hawks will take a day off on Friday before heading to Assumption for a double-header on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a noon start.
