The UMass Lowell River Hawks (14-20, 7-9 Northeast-10) split a conference doubleheader against the Assumption Greyhounds (14-14, 8-8 NE-10) on Thursday afternoon at River View Field. Sophomore Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) tallied four RBI in the early game, while Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA) allowed just three hits in six innings during the late tilt, despite the River Hawks being shut out.
In the first game, Assumption jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before the River Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Bryan knocked in her 23rd RBI of the year on a single up the middle to score classmate Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, MA) to tie the game, before Boris hit a two-run bomb, her first homerun of the afternoon.
The Greyhounds answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth on a three-run homerun by Melissa Jalbert, but the 4-3 advantage would not last long for Assumption, as Boris retaliated with her second homerun of the day, a three-run blast, in the bottom of the fifth to give UMass Lowell a 6-4 lead.
The River Hawk offense was not finished, however and broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning, giving them the 10-4 lead they would hold on to through the final out. Capitalizing on five Greyhound errors in the game and nine hits in the contest, UMass Lowell only allowed six hits and committed two errors of its own.
Bryan finished the game 1-2 at the plate with two runs scored and a pair of RBI, while senior Heather Ross (Waltham, MA) went 3-4 with two RBI, as well.
Boris threw the complete game, walking two and striking out seven in the outing. She improved to 7-7 on the year, while Assumption’s Chelsea Durso fell to 1-6 after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits.
In the second game, a pitchers’ duel, Assumption’s Jennifer Lowrey improved to 6-5 on the year, striking out 14 UMass Lowell batters in the process. Bryan allowed three hits and one run in six innings of work and was relieved by Boris, who allowed one hit and no runs in the final inning of the game.
Bryan (5-8) had a no-hitter through five, as left fielder Ashley Daniels (Medford, MA) made a stellar diving catch in the top of the fifth to keep the Greyhounds without a hit, but Assumption came back with a run in the sixth to get on the board for the first time in the game. Lauren Medeiros had the lone RBI for either squad in the 1-0 showdown.
MacKenzie finished the day 4-6, scoring twice and walking once. Senior Katelyn Hebert (Lowell, MA) was the only other River Hawk to notch a hit in the second game, as Lowrey held UMass Lowell to just three runs in the contest.
The River Hawks continue their homestand with a doubleheader against American International on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon on River View Field.
