The game started out on a good note for UMass Lowell, who scored a run in the top of the first inning. Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) registered a one-out single to third base and then stole second to get into scoring position. Kneeland came through in the next at bat with an RBI single up the middle, granting the River Hawks an early 1-0 lead. The second-year slugger now has a team-high 31 RBI on the season.
Starter Ted Haley (Cranston, RI) stormed through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Haley walked the first two batters, setting up a four run fourth on three hits, including and two-run double to center field by Brendan Shepard (Boxford, MA).
With the lead in hand, Stonehill scored twice more over the remaining innings, highlighted by a solo home run from Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, CN) in the seventh.
Haley pitched five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. He was relieved by Jeffrey Maloney (Haverhill, MA) who tossed two innings and surrendered one run. Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, MA) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
In the midst of a four-game road stand, the River Hawks will now head to North Andover, MA for clash with rival Merrimack on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
