The River Hawk baseball club (19-16) fell in a hard fought contest with the Bentley Falcons (15-17) on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 6-3. In what was a pitcher's duel for the first seven innings, freshman hurler Garrett Cole (Manchester, NH) was tremendous on the mound, pitching eight plus innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk.

"He pitched well, he gave us a chance to win and made one mistake in the ninth," said head coach Ken Harring. "When you're playing like we are, you need to play perfect baseball. He gave us a chance to win and that's all I can ask."

The Falcons struck early in the affair, scoring an unearned run in the second inning. With men on first and second, an error at third base sent the ball into shallow left field, deep enough to plate the lead runner.

The River Hawks missed a chance to score in the seventh inning as they advanced the runner, JT Leary (Newburyport, MA), to third with one out. Leary was stranded just 90 feet shy of home after a strikeout and foul out ended the inning.

Bentley added one more in the seventh after a pair of singles set up James Roche (Arlington, MA) for an RBI hit to right field, improving the Falcons' lead over UMass Lowell to 2-0.

Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) came through in a clutch eighth inning at bat. With a runner on and two outs, Notargiacomo hit a line drive to left that hung just high enough to clear the wall and tie the game at 2-2.

The Falcons pulled away again in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs to assume a lead of 6-2 lead. Bentley opened the inning with a pair of hits and a walk as relief pitcher Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) took over on the mound. Bentley used a timely two-run single by Roche and an errant throw in a tumultuous ninth inning to ultimately secure the win.

UMass Lowell scored one more in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as it fell by the final of 6-3. Leary led off with a double and was eventually brought home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA).

Cole was terrific through eight plus innings on the mound. The righty allowed four runs, three earned, while striking out eight and walking only one batter. He was relieved by Monico who gave up two runs, one earned, in a frantic ninth inning of work.

With today's loss in the books, the River Hawks will hit the road as they travel to Stonehill College on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
