April 11, 2010

Box Score

UMass Lowell baseball (19-15, 7-9 NE-10) played Stonehill (14-11, 9-4 NE-10) close for the first seven innings, but the Skyhawks pulled away late in a 7-2 loss at LeLacheur Park on Sunday. Right fielder Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) had two hits and an RBI in defeat.

Stonehill broke the ice in the second inning with a solo home run from Matt Skane (Mashpee, MA) to left field. The one-run blast was just his second home run of the season.

The Skyhawks picked up two more runs in the fifth inning to expand its lead to 3-0. Michael White (Lisbon, NH) ripped a ball down the right field line and snuck it around the foul pole for his first home run of the season. During the next at bat, Kyle Shepard (Boxford, MA) hit a triple to right field that was lost in the sun and was then singled home by Mitch Davis (Bow, NH).

UMass Lowell finally broke through on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with a two-out base hit from Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, MA). Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) led off the inning with a double and looked to be stranded until Sanborn connected on a two-out single into center field to bring his catcher home.

The River Hawks continued to chip away, picking up another run in the seventh frame. Junior Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, MA) led off with a double to left field and was immediately singled home by Jacobs, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

The Skyhawks pulled away in the final two innings, piling on four runs on five hits and three walks to take a 7-2 advantage.

UMass Lowell went down quickly in the ninth, falling silent in three straight batters for the loss.

Starter Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) was solid through six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four strikeouts. Twice on the mound, Nunes set down the Skyhawks 1-2-3.

Left-hander Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, MA) gave up one run in two innings of relief, surrendering three hits and striking out two. Freshman Garrett Cole (Manchester, NH) tossed the start of the ninth inning, but was relieved after allowing one run and landing in a bases loaded jam. Mike Sloban (Merrimac, MA) took over for Cole with one out and was hit for two more runs before escaping the trouble.

Looking to shake off three straight losses, the River Hawks will take Monday off before hosting Bentley on Tuesday. First pitch versus the Falcons at LeLacheur Park is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
