April 10, 2010

Box Score (Game 1) | Box Score (Game 2)

The nationally-ranked, No. 14 New Haven Chargers (22-2, 12-0 Northeast-10) were too much for UMass Lowell (12-16, 5-5 NE-10), as the River Hawks fell 10-0 in five innings in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader and then 2-1 in a much closer tilt in the later game.

Sophomore C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) tallied the lone UMass Lowell hit in the first game, as New Haven's Breanne Gleason improved to 17-2 on the year with her one-hit performance. She walked four River Hawks and struck out six in her complete-game, five inning effort.

UMass Lowell's Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY) pitched 2 1/3 innings for the River Hawks and picked up her first loss of the year after allowing four hits and five runs. She was relieved by Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA), who went 1 2/3 innings, striking out a pair and allowing five runs on three hits.

The River Hawks bounced back in the second game, allowing just two Charger runs in the contest. Unfortunately, they were only able to muster one run of their own, so they fell to New Haven 2-1, despite out-hitting them 6-5. The victory was the Chargers' 18th consecutive.

Sophomore P Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) pitched the complete game, allowing just five hits and two runs, while she struck out six New Haven batters. At the plate, she also went 2-3 in the game.

Classmate 2B Meagan Guy (Berlin, CT) also went 2-3, scoring the lone River Hawk run of the day, while senior Katelyn Hebert (Lowell, MA) went 1-3 and knocked in the RBI in the fifth inning.

New Haven went up 1-0 in the first before UMass Lowell tied the game in the top of the fifth. The Chargers retaliated in the bottom of the inning and the River Hawks were unable to rally in the sixth.

UMass Lowell continues its Connecticut trip with a doubleheader at Southern Connecticut tomorrow beginning at noon.
