UMass Lowell hockey head coach Blaise MacDonald skated with Brian and Tim Curran at the Tsongas Center on Thursday for the Seventh Annual Skate for a Cure. The event helped raise money to find a cure for diabetes.
Brian, 11, and Tim, 14, skated as many laps as they could around the rink for one hour. Donations were made for each lap or a set amount was given for the event.
"It's very inspiring when young people have the conviction to take on a cause," said MacDonald. "We're just happy to help facilitate their efforts."
Skate for a Cure was started in 2004 by the Curran family after their son, Brian, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 5. In 2008, Tim was also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Both brothers play hockey and due to the disease they require four shots of insulin each day.
To date, the event has raised almost $50,000 in helping find a cure for diabetes. If you are interested in making a donation to Skate for a Cure, please make checks payable to Cure Diabetes Inc.
