Box Score
The UMass Lowell baseball team (13-9, 2-4 NE-10) split a Saturday afternoon double-header at New Haven (15-4, 4-2 NE-10). The River Hawks fell in game one, 4-3, but bounced back in game two, 6-0 as Dustin Ramey (Kingston, NH) tossed a two-hit shutout.
"After a tough loss our backs were against the wall and Ramey put us on his back with a great performance," said head coach Ken Harring. "We played really good all day and to be where we were and to get where we went, you come home a little bit happier. Ramey was the key today."
UMass Lowell dropped game one on a walk-off RBI single by Kyle Donnelly (Oneonta, NY).
The River Hawks jumped on the board in the top of the first, taking the game's first lead after Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) drove in Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) with a single into right field.
The lead was short lived as New Haven scored three runs off of starter Jack Leathersich (Beverly, MA) in the second, his only runs allowed in the contest. The sophomore lefty picked up two quick outs before surrendering back-to-back walks that set the stage for a passed ball and a two-run single to plate three Chargers.
The game went scoreless for the next five innings before UMass Lowell tallied a run in the eighth and tied the game in the ninth. JT Leary (Newburyport, MA) scored on a passed ball and Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, NY) drew a bases loaded walk to lock the score at 3-3 after eight and a half innings.
The rally was cut short in the bottom of the ninth as Donnelly singled in the game-winning run.
Leathersich pitched six innings while allowing three runs, striking out seven and walking three. He was relieved by Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, MA) who pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two batters. Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) pitched the ninth, allowing one run on two hits.
The River Hawks bounced back in game two, picking up a 6-0 win to earn the Saturday spilt.
Felix Martinez (Miami, FL) snapped a fifth inning scoreless tie as he knocked home Leary on an error by the pitcher.
UMass Lowell broke the game wide open with a four run seventh inning to put the club up 5-0. Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) singled in Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) to put the ball in motion. Burns soon followed with a two-run double, plating Martinez and von Kriegenbergh. Cam Kneeland (Rowley, MA) capped the scoring off with a RBI triple to bring home Burns.
Burns tallied one more RBI in the top of the ninth on a single to left field, bringing home Jordan Silva (Groveland, MA).
Junior right-hander Dustin Ramey (Kingston, NH) shined in the win, pitching a complete game shutout. Ramey allowed just two hits while striking out eight batters. The New Hampshire native faced just 30 batters on the day.
With today's double-header in the books, UMass Lowell returns home to LeLacheur Park for a Sunday afternoon contest with Southern New Hampshire (5-13, 0-3 NE-10). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
