March 13, 2010

Box Score

UMass Lowell baseball (5-4) swept a Saturday double-header with St. Thomas Aquinas (2-6) in Santaluces, FL by scores of 1-0 and 3-0. For the day, River Hawk pitchers surrendered just four hits over 16 innings.

Jack Leathersich (Beverly, MA) was masterful in UMass Lowell's 1-0 victory in game one, pitching a complete game shutout for his first win of 2010. The sophomore lefty allowed three hits while collecting eight strikeouts and two walks.

The River Hawks only run came on a sacrifice fly by Cam Kneeland (Rowley, MA) to bring home Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) in the second inning.

Pitching dominated the box score again in game two as freshman Garrett Cole (Manchester, NH) tossed five and a third innings of one hit baseball to improve his record to 2-1 on the campaign. Three pitchers combined in the 3-0 shutout win as Cole struck out five before handing the reigns to Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) and Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, MA). Nunes closed out the sixth while Toyfair earned his first save of the year with a scoreless seventh.

Jacobs and JT Leary (Newburyport, MA) knocked in a pair of runs on RBI singles, while Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) notched an RBI double. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) tallied three hits in the contest.

The River Hawks will continue on their fast paced Florida trip with another double-header on Sunday against Molloy starting at 1:30 p.m.
