Box Score
The Saint Anselm Hawks (17-9, 13-8 NE-10) shot 63.2% from the field en route to a 101-70 victory over the UMass Lowell River Hawks (15-11, 12-9) in Northeast-10 action in Manchester on Saturday afternoon. Saint Anselm’s 36 field goals, including 12 from long range, were too much for the River Hawks in their second-to-last regular season game.
Greg Vetrano and Thomas Baudinet combined for 52 points for Saint Anselm, who owned a 54-35 lead after the first. The Hawks went 9-13 from behind the arc in the first, while Baudinet tallied 22 of his 26 in the first 20 minutes. The duo went 19-39 on the afternoon, launching seven threes between the two of them.
“We ran into a very good offensive team that played just about as well as you could, offensively,” said head coach Greg Herenda. “After the first five minutes, we really didn’t have many answers for them.”
UMass Lowell came out strong to start the game, leading for the first 2:07 of play, including a 7-2 lead with 18:15 remaining in the half. The Hawks then went on a three-point shooting spree, going on a 22-0 run to settle the score at 24-7 with 13:18 to go in the half. UMass Lowell tried to chip away but never got back within in single digits.
In the second, UMass Lowell brought the game back within 13 (54-41), going on a 6-0 run on a pair of threes by seniors Kevin Carr (Lancaster, OH) and Ali Kanaan (Montreal, Que.) to open the half. Saint Anselm had all the answers, though, stopping the skid and eventually going on another run, this time 20-6, to stretch the game to 91-59 with just under five minutes remaining.
“We were a step slow to everything tonight,” Herenda said. “Loose balls, rebounds, everything.”
Four River Hawks scored in double figures, led by freshman Matt Welch’s (Lowell, MA) 15 point contribution. Carr and Kanaan each tallied 11 points, while Kanaan also grabbed a team-best six rebounds (four offensive) and dished a pair of assists.
With 11 points on the night, Carr’s career total currently stands at 1,006, making him just the 34th member of UMass Lowell’s 1,000 point club and the first since Brandon Arnette in 2006.
"It's great for Kevin to reach the 1,000 point milestone," Herenda said. "I'm very proud of his accomplishment."
Right behind Carr and Kanaan was sophomore Kyle Caiola (Parma, OH) with 10 points and senior Craig Heatherly (Mishawaka, IN), who finished the night with eight points after making his 100th career start.
The River Hawks shot 39.4% on the afternoon (26-66) and owned the 38-33 advantage on the glass, including an 18-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.
In addition to Vetrano and Baudinet’s stellar performances, Pat Luptowski tallied 14 for the Hawks and Branimir Zeko notched 10 points on the afternoon.
UMass Lowell returns to the court on Wednesday evening, taking on Franklin Pierce, in Rindge, NH, for its final game of the regular season at 7:30 p.m.
