Brown, Lewis Earn NE-10 Rookie Honors

David Brown, a freshman from Chelmsford, Mass., and Keith Lewis, a freshman from Nashua, N.H., were named the Northeast-10 Conference Track and Field Rookies of the Week Monday, the Conference announced.

UMass Lowell enjoyed a handful of solid results Saturday at the Northeastern Jay Carisella Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

In their collegiate debuts, Brown and Lewis both emerged the top finishers among Division II and III entries in their events.

Brown, named the Track Freshman Athlete of the Week, placed fourth overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.26.

The Field Freshman Athlete of the Week, Lewis took fourth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.

Additionally, junior Jeff Veiga (Lowell, Mass.) was named the NE-10 Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week as he placed third at the NCAA Championship. Veiga ran the 10K course in 30:52.8 to earn All-American honors and lead the River Hawks to 13th place.

Three River Hawks were named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll, including senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, Mass.), who won the long jump, set a school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship.

Nguidjoi leapt to a distance of 47’ 5.25’’, displacing his own school record of 45’ 5.50’’ by nearly two feet. He also placed in a tie for 11th overall (third among Division II and III athletes) in the long jump with a distance of 21’ 2.5’’.

Senior Donte Brown (Raynham, Mass.) placed second in the 400 meter dash in 48.64 seconds and provisionally qualified for the NCAAs.

For the women’s team, sophomore Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro, Mass.) won two events, including the 200 meter dash in 25.47 seconds. She also ran a leg on UMass Lowell’s 4X400 meter relay team which took first in 3:56.15.

UMass Lowell enters the Harvard Invitational Saturday.
