The River Hawk hockey club (1-4-2, 1-4-0 Hockey East) heads to #4 Boston College (4-2-0, 2-1-0 HE) on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. contest in the Conte Forum. UMass Lowell is 4-1-1 in its last six meetings with the Eagles.
The River Hawks trail in the all-time series with Boston College, 31-53-7, and are just 15-26-3 when playing in Chestnut Hill. Last season, however, the River Hawks outscored the eventual NCAA Champion Eagles, 8-4, while taking two of three games.
Last weekend UMass Lowell came up short in a home-and-home series with #3 Boston University. After falling, 5-1, at home on Friday, the River Hawks held a third period 1-0 lead on the Terriers in the Agganis Arena on Saturday thanks to a close quarters one-timer from Joseph Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.). The advantage would not last as Boston University scored two goals in the final five minutes to steal the victory from UMass Lowell's grasp.
For the season, freshman Chad Ruhwedel (San Diego, Calif.) leads the River Hawks with six points on one goal and five assists. The blue-liner is third among conference rookies in scoring and was named the HE Freshman of the Week on Oct. 25.
Close behind Ruhwedel is sophomore alternate captain Riley Wetmore (Swanton, Vt.). The hard skating forward has two goals, including the lone UMass Lowell game-winner, and three assists for five points.
For Boston College, Cam Atkinson and Joe Whitney hold a share of the scoring lead with seven points each.
Following tonight's contest, the River Hawks will prepare for another difficult weekend as Vermont and New Hampshire drop into the Tsongas Center for a pair of HE games on Friday and Saturday. Both contests are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
