The UMass Lowell men’s basketball team (2-0, 0-0 NE-10) will open the 2010-11 conference schedule with a home game against the Purple Knights of Saint Michael’s College (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) at 7:30 this evening.

The River Hawks are coming off a pair of victories in the 2010 Tip-Off Classic, most recently with an 81-71 win over Felician. The Purple Knights split their weekend, winning their second game against Caldwell College, 66-56.

UMass Lowell is led by sophomore guard Scotty Tavares-Taylor (Roxbury, Mass.) averaged 22.0 points per game over the weekend and was named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll. Classmate Matt Welch (Lowell, Mass.) averaged 15.5 during the span and leads the squad with 6.0 rebounds per game.

The Purple Knights are led by Travis Warech’s 24.0 per contest and Tyler Schilling’s 11.0 boards per game, as well. Michael Holton, Jr. has averaged 15.5 points per game to start off the year, as well.

The teams last met on Feb. 3, 2010 in Costello gym, as the River Hawks fought back from a 24-point deficit to overcome Saint Michael’s 85-82 in overtime. After downing the Purple Knights 67-52 in the conference-opener in Colchester, Vt. last year, too, UMass Lowell successfully completed its season sweep of Saint Michael’s.

After this evening’s tilt, the River Hawks will continue NE-10 play with a trip to Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
