The River Hawks fell, 2-1, in the final moments of Saturday's clash with #5 Boston University at the Agganis Arena. Freshman Joseph Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.) scored the lone UMass Lowell goal, granting the River Hawks a short-lived third period lead.
The loss drops UMass Lowell to 1-4-2 on the season and 1-4-0 in Hockey East action. The Terriers remain untarnished, improving to 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in conference contests.
The teams skated through a scoreless first period as UMass Lowell slightly outshot Boston University, 14-13. The River Hawks came away empty despite a five-minute major on Max Nicastro (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).
The stalemate continued in the second as UMass Lowell again held a slight edge on the shot chat, 7-6. The River Hawks killed off a pair of Terrier power plays, limiting Boston University to just three shots with the man advantage.
The third period looked like more of the same until Pendenza shocked the crowd with a goal at 9:33 into play. Joe Caveney (Fitchburg, Mass.) was behind the net and hit Pendenza with a perfectly timed pass for a quick shot to beat goaltender Grant Rollheiser (Chilliwack, B.C.). The goal was Pendenza's third in just five career games.
Just as quickly as the River Hawks gained a lead, the Terriers erased it, scoring with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Alex Chiasson (St. Augustin, Que.) connected on a pass from Charlie Coyle (East Weymouth, Mass.) on a delayed penalty that granted Boston University an extra skater.
With momentum on their side, the Terriers finished the comeback with the game winning goal by Chris Connolly (Duluth, Minn.) at 19:32 into the third. David Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) and Adam Clendening (Wheatfield, N.Y.) assisted on the score.
Freshman Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.) was stellar in net, making 28 saves in the hard fought loss. Carr falls to 1-2-1 on the young season. Rollheiser stopped 24-of-25 shots to improve to 2-0-0 on the campaign.
Both squads came away empty on the power play for the second consecutive night. UMass Lowell blanked on two chances while the Terriers were 0-for-5.
The River Hawks will have little time to rest after tonight's loss. UMass Lowell travels to Boston College on Tuesday for a battle with the defending National Champions at 7 p.m. in the Conte Forum.
